Lions vs Ashton Town: Match Preview

February 7, 2017

Stockport Town welcome Ashton Town to Stockport Sports Village this Saturday afternoon in the first of a double-header in the Hallmark Security League.

The Lions, who remain unbeaten under manager Dave Wild, head into the weekend fixture on the back of a hard-fought draw away at Widnes last Saturday. However Wild believes his side were unlucky to leave Widnes with just a point after taking a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Ashton Town arrive at Lambeth Grove with their manager John Brownrigg having had a midweek clash at home to Daisy Hill called off due to a waterlogged pitch. The most recent match Ashton played in saw them turned over in a 5-1 away defeat to promotion chasing Litherland Remyca.

That result saw Ashton’s losing run extended to three consecutive matches, and Brownrigg’s side remain on the hunt for a first win since September last year.

This weekend’s clash is the first in a quick double-header for the sides as Stockport host Ashton this Saturday, before Ashton return home to The Ashton Town Stadium where they will welcome The Lions on Saturday 18th February.

Despite Ashton only taking one point from a possible 15 in their last five matches, they have still managed to find the back of the net eight times, a statistic that Wild and his coaches will take note of as not to take their opponents lightly.

Wild’s Stockport are undefeated in their last five league matches and seven goals along the way from six different goalscorers has shown the division that they have a squad with the ability to score goals from all positions. In fact, under Wild’s tenure it is right-back Daryll Grant who has scored the most with two league goals to his name already.

A second home win in a fortnight for Wild, following his first win against Silsden at SSV, could see Stockport rise up the table once again given other results go their way and see then jump to 8th. Meanwhile a rare away win for Ashton could see Brownrigg’s side cut the gap to Eccleshall in 21st with a number of games in hand.

All the action gets underway at Stockport Sports Village this Saturday afternoon, kick-off 3pm.
