Town To Launch Education Programme

February 24, 2017

Stockport Town are proud to announce that following rigorous planning and negotiation; we will be launching our first Full Time scholarship programme in association with Coaching Connexions. The programme represents a huge step forward for the club and continues the rapid progress we have made since forming in 2014.

The partnership with Coaching Connexions is an ideal fit for the club; they are a Grade 2 OFSTED Sports Education provider and have most recently helped 6 other non league clubs to create similar programmes including Chorley, AFC Telford, Gainsborough Trinity.

The scholarship programme will be available to boys aged 16-18 with the view that new recruits make up our U18 squad for the 2017/18 season. As part of the Coaching Connexions portfolio; our players will also have the opportunity to play in the U19 National league; the largest and most prestigious league for U19 players. Our best players will have the chance to showcase their skills against the likes of Crewe Alexandra, Preston North End and neighbouring Stockport County.

For boys leaving school, they will sign up for two years and will have the opportunity to achieve up to 3 A-Levels. The most talented players will also have access to a host of Footballing opportunities in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Spain. Most importantly at this stage; Coaching Connexions’ education track record leaves us in now doubt that our players will receive the very best sports education in the area.

To kick start the recruitment for our 2017/18 squad we will be holding an open trial at Stockport Sports Village on Monday 13th March at 7pm. There will also be a presentation to interested players and parents on the evening which will reveal the exciting plans for the boys 2 year journey and the potential outcomes for the players following the programme. For anyone in the area looking to stay in Sports; this is an opportunity not to be missed!

The trial will be attended by our first team management who will be scouting for the best young talent to represent the club in the coming years. Stockport Town Director Ian Dixon commented, “We are extremely excited about the launch of our education programme. We have been working behind the scenes for a number of months to secure this agreement which continues our club ethos of giving young people an opportunity to progress.

“Coaching Connexions have an excellent track record of delivering this programme and we are confident that students will get the best possible education and football experience.”

First Team Manager, Dave Wild  commented “This is a huge step in the right direction for the club and will certainly help us bread young talent and long term, it will help me to create a real identity in terms of the way we play”.

The trial get underway next month, starting at 6:30pm on Monday 13th March. For those wanting to register for the trial in the meantime, please register your details on through the link below:
