Lions Down Carlisle On The Road

March 19, 2018

Stockport Town ran riot near The Border as they defeated Carlisle City 4-1 at Gilford Park Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the Hallmark Security League.

The Lions claimed a comfortable victory over 10-man Carlisle following goals from Jesurun Uchegbulam (2), Conor Downes and rounded off by Ezequiel Miranda. City grabbed a consolation effort in the second half through Robert McCartney.

The match got off to a balanced start with both sides attacking well and testing defences in tricky conditions as the snow came down over Gilford Park.

Stockport grew into the game as Kyle Haslam kept the away side in it, and just on there half hour mark, Ruben Abreu swung in a delightful corner and there was Jeserun to nod in at the back post.

Abreu had the ball in the back of the net just before the half-time whistle but he was denied by the offside flag on the opposite side.

The second half got off to a great start for the visitors as Jeserun grabbed his second of the match following great play from Downes in midfield, with Uchegbulam cutting inside and firing into the far corner of Lewis Casson’s goal.

With the Lions in control and with a comfortable lead, things went from bad to worse as Craig Benjamin was sent off for Carlisle as the home side were forced to play out the remainder of the match with 10-men.

However an extra man wouldn't have helped Carlisle a few minutes later as Downes curled in a delightful freekick past Casson in goal to make it 3-0 to the Lions.

The home side did get a goal back through McCartney after he slotted the ball home, all despite some disputes from Stockport players about a foul on Miranda in the build up to the goal.

It would however be Miranda who had the last laugh in the match as the Town left-back advanced forward rot join in with an attack and was there on hand to strike a sweet finish home to make it four to the visitors.

The game drew to a close as Stockport came out deserved winners and look ahead to consecutive away games in the league, including a trip away to league leaders Silsden next Saturday.
