Stockport Town exited the FA Cup in the Extra Preliminary Round after being defeated by Chadderton FC
The Lions fell to defeat against fellow North West Counties Football League Premier Division side Chaddy by a scoreline of 2-1 at the Emplas Commercial North Stadium.
Prior to this game, both Chadderton and Town were looking to make it past the extra preliminary round and improve on last season's FA Cup journey. This is due to both sides falling to defeat during last season’s FA Cup campaign, with the Lions losing 2-1 against 1874 Northwich, meanwhile Chaddy lost 7-1 against Wythenshawe Town.
The first 20 minutes of the game would be an action-packed affair between the two sides as both Town and Chaddy would create plenty of chances from outside of the box; however, neither side could convert their chances.
In the 22nd minute, Lowe would receive the first booking of the day as he attempted to win the ball back from Garbiel Cole in Town’s box, but would only catch Cole with his tackle. Not long after this booking, Owen Kirby would also receive a yellow card as he attempted to clear the ball away from the right-hand side, but he would accidentally kick Chadderton’s left winger, Flynn.
In the 28th minute, the ball would be sent forward for George Kattah, who was able to beat his man, and he found himself through on goal with only Chaddy keeper, Joey Oldham, to beat. Kattah would easily slot the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to put the Lions ahead.
After the goal, Town would continue to pressure Chadderton’s back line to hopefully find a second goal and extend the lead.
Eventually, in the 38th minute, Kattah would find his way through on goal again; however, his resulting shot would be saved by Oldham, and it would be cleared away.
Just two minutes later, Chaddy would play the ball into the box for Matthew Crothers, who had enough space to send the ball into the bottom left corner of Town’s net, making it 1-1 with five minutes left of the first half.
Half Time – Chadderton 1-1 Stockport Town
Not long into the second half, Lowe would find himself with the ball in Town’s and almost fired it home to put the hosts ahead, but luckily for Town, Josh Schofield was barely able to stop the shot as he narrowly saved it with his legs.
Schofield was forced into action again as former Town player, Dan McLaughlin, found himself through on goal with only Schofield to beat, but Town’s keeper would easily save it, keeping the game level at 1-1.
In the 64th minute, from a free kick, Town would almost find themselves ahead once again, as Toby Green’s shot would rebound off the crossbar and into Kattah. Unfortunately, Kattah wasn’t ready for it as it bounced off him and into the post before Chaddy’s defence cleared it away.
Minutes later, Chadderton would fire the ball forward for their number seven, Tyler Berry, who would play a beautiful through ball into Lewis Byrne. Byrne would manage to get the ball past Schofield and into the back of the net to make it 2-1 to the hosts.
In the 72nd minute, Chaddy decided to make a triple substitution, which saw Lowe, McLaughlin, and Flynn get replaced by Matty Barlow, Jack Sloan, and Adam Dale. A few minutes later, Town would make their first change of the day, which saw Josh Fowles come on for Ethan Padden.
Around the 80th minute, Chadderton once again had one of their players booked, but this time it would be for preventing Town from having a counterattack by dragging Fowles down. Immediately after the booking, Town decided to make another change as Toby Green would be taken off for Rhys Ferguson.
Just before the 90th minute, Town decided to make a third change as Kylan Depeiaza would enter the match, replacing Keane Barugh. However, as quickly as he came on, Depeiaza would be shown a red card for a needless and reckless tackle on a Chadderton player.
Full Time – Chadderton 2-1 Stockport Town
This result would see Chadderton progress through to the preliminary round of the FA Cup while knocking Town out.
Stockport Town’s next match will be on Saturday, 9th August, against Padiham FC back in the NWCFL Premier Division at Stockport Sports Village.
