Match Report. Charnock Richard. 12/04/25

Stockport Town are left with only a point after Darren Ehimamiegho’s goal in the first half was cancelled out by Charnock Richard’s Shay Stansfield’s goal in the second half.

Before the match, the Lions were looking to return to winning ways after a 2-0 loss against third-placed Ramsbottom United. Meanwhile, Charnock Richard were looking to improve their league position and find their way into the top ten.

The Lions had a few chances early on, but were unable to convert them until Darren Ehimamiegho received the ball from over the top of the Charnock Richard back line and was able to get around the keeper before putting the ball in the empty net. Town were ahead after only five minutes.

After the goal, neither side had a chance until the 16th minute when Rhys Ferguson was able to pressure the Charnock Richard defence into giving up the ball and allowing him to have a shot, but his effort was weak and didn’t cause a real threat for Ryan Hamer in the Charnock Richard goal.

The first booking of the game went to Shay Stansfield, as his challenge in the centre of the park was deemed reckless by the referee.

More chances came for the Lions, but they were unable to cause the Charnock Richard backline any problems, and this eventually led to the Greens' first major chance when, in the 33rd minute from the left-hand side, Davis put in a cross, but Harley Monaghan was able to stop the chance and get the ball cleared.

In the 38th minute of the game, Toby Green received the ball just outside the box, before he cut inside and had a shot on goal, but it didn’t cause a threat as it went past everyone and out for a goal kick. However, after his shot, Green unfortunately got injured and had to be subbed off. The substitution saw Calum Gardner replace Toby Green.

After the change, more chances started coming for both Town and the Greens, but none of them were converted, and the referee blew for half time with the Lions ahead by one goal.

Straight after half time, Charnock Richard were immediately looking for an equaliser as they kept getting chance after chance, but great defensive teamwork by the Lions held them at bay. In the 54th minute, Charnock Richard made their first change of the game; this saw Sky Sinclair come off for Luca Latona.

Eventually, Town had used the Greens’ constant attacking against them by starting a counterattack in the 56th minute, but as Ehimamiegho was running through, he was recklessly fouled by Luke Power, and he received a yellow card.

After the yellow card, Luke Power was immediately replaced by Lewis Haydock. Town also made a change, with Jamie Walsh coming off for Jack Atkinson. Not long after their previous change, Charnock Richard made another change, with Jordan Darr coming on for Matty Davies.

Immediately after the substitutions, Darr attempted to get the ball after a mistake at the back, but unfortunately, as he got the ball, he kicked Josh Schofield in the chest, causing a foul. Town then decided to replace Player/Manager Paul Turnbull with youngster Oliver Kvaternik.

In the 65th minute, from a corner, Shay Stansfield was able to get above everyone in the box and was able to put the ball into the back of the net, making the scoreline 1-1. After the goal, Town made another change to hopefully make an impact as they subbed Rhys Ferguson off for Kylan Depeiaza.

In the 73rd minute, the Lions played some excellent Football as they were able to break through the Charnock Richard defence and have a chance, but unfortunately, the resulting cross into the box went past everyone and out for a goal kick.

Charnock Richard applied the pressure for the next 10 minutes, but they were unable to convert pressure and chances into a second goal. Despite all the chances, Charnock Richard made two more changes, this saw Ashley Young and Matty Westwell get replaced by Spencer Bibby and Cameron Gourley.

In the 84th minute, Oliver Kvaternik was able to dribble past four different players but opted to pass the ball into Padden, who was then unable to shoot due to the Charnock Richard defence being able to recover after Kvaternik got past them.

Town made their final sub in the 88th minute as Harley Monaghan was replaced by Terry Benson-Brewer.

Stockport Town’s next match is against playoff side Padiham FC for the final game of the season on Saturday, 19th April at Stockport Sports Village.
