Match Report. Ramsbottom United (A). 5/4/25

Stockport Town head home in defeat after their final away game of the season due to third place Ramsbottom United scoring two goals in the first half to secure the win.

Prior to this match Ramsbottom United were looking to take all three points to keep their slim title hopes alive but they needed help from else where meanwhile, Stockport Town were just looking to earn the win to improve their position in the NWCFL Premier Division league table.

Early on in the first half Toby Green was looking lively as he was able to bring multiple chances for Town but the chances weren’t converted.

Unfortunately, for Town the missed chances ended up costing them as The Rams had a chance from the corner and Luke Sephton was able to get his head on the ball and put the home side ahead at the far post.

After the goal, Town didn’t let their heads go down as they kept getting chances against the hosts. The best chances came in the 25th minute, as Darren Ehimamiegho was able to make a run through the hosts defence and have a shot but it was saved by the home sides Goalkeeper.

However, in the 35th minute, Oumar Camara was able to convert a rebound after Baker’s shot was initially saved by Schofield. That goal put the hosts 2-0 up against The Lions.

The match referee blew the half time whistle. The Rams went into the break winning 2-0 but out of the title race due to results elsewhere.

Just after half time Ramsbottom made their first sub of the day. This saw Tom Walker replace David Lynch.

Not long into the second half, Ethan Padden was booked for a poor challenge on a Ramsbottom United player.

Three minutes later, Callum Gardner had a chance for Town to pull a goal back for the Lions but his shot whistled wide of the post.

In the 60th minute, Toby Green was able to have a shot from 20 yards out but his shot went wide of the Ramsbottom goal.

After that chance Town decided to make their first change of the match. This saw Callum Gardner come off for debutant Rhys Ferguson. In the 68th minute Richie Baker was replaced by Josh Tinker.

As Ramsbottom United controlled the final stages of the game and looked to pick up 3 points. Town tried hard to get back into the game and replaced Toby Green for the returning Jamie Walsh and later on replaced Alex Harvey for another debutant Terry Benson-Brewer. Meanwhile, Ramsbottom replaced Harvey Whyte for Rob Wilson.

The game had slowed down and both teams were cancelling each other out on a difficult pitch. Town and Ramsbottom made their final subs with Town replacing Ehimamiegho and Keane Barugh for Collins Kagame and Kylan Depeiaza. Meanwhile, Ramsbottom replaced Tom Hoyle for Harvey Hayhurst.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, Jamie Walsh received a yellow card for a poor challenge. Not long after his booking Walsh played a cross into the box and it found Ferguson but his header went just wide.

After this chance, Ramsbottom made their final change with goal scorer Luke Sephton coming off for Corey Stacey.

The Lions last chance of the game came in the 86th minute as Rhys Ferguson played the ball across the box into Walsh but his shot ended up going over the bar.

With that result Ramsbottom United took all three points but due to other results elsewhere, their title hopes were officially over. Meanwhile, for The Lions this result saw them remain in 10th place but allowed the chasing teams to pull closer to them in the table.

Stockport Town’s next match is against Charnock Richard at Stockport Sports Village on Saturday 12th April.
