Match Report: Stockport Town 2–3 Prestwich Heys
Macron Cup – First Round | Saturday 27 September 2025 | Stockport Sports Village
Stockport Town’s Macron Cup campaign came to an end at the first round stage on Saturday, as a late goal handed Prestwich Heys a 3–2 victory at Stockport Sports Village.
The visitors took the lead midway through the first half when Sambizi tapped home after a lengthy spell of build-up play. Stockport responded instantly, with Jack Atkinson producing a superb chipped finish to level the scores at 1–1 just a minute later.
Town continued to press and were unlucky not to go ahead when a corner struck the crossbar. Their persistence was rewarded shortly afterwards with a brilliantly worked move – neat skill in midfield released the ball wide, and a pinpoint cross by Josh Fowles, took a deflection and hit the back of the net to give Stockport a 2–1 lead at half-time.
Prestwich fought back after the interval and equalised brilliantly through Appleton, who found the top corner with an excellent strike. Both sides pushed for a winner in an evenly matched contest, but it was the visitors who snatched victory at the death, as Findlow headed home in the closing moments to make it 3–2.
It was a spirited display from the Lions and one that could easily have brought progression, but the result sees Stockport’s cup run halted in the opening round, good luck to Prestwich Heys in the next round of this season Macron Cup.
The club would like to thank all supporters for their backing throughout the tie. Focus now turns back to league action as the Lions look to build on the positives shown in this performance.
